A Moment

A wide pasture on a bright clear day with dark turned earth at one side, a long wooden rail fence running toward a line of evergreen and autumn trees, and snow-capped Mount Rainier along the far horizon under a big blue sky

A moment, taken just now. I stopped long enough to get it — the whole pasture open in front of me, the fence running out toward the trees, and the mountain set right on the far edge of everything.

The light was coming down clean on it. Green grass and the old dry grass side by side, the turned ground dark along one side, and that big blue sky stretched over all of it.

Then I looked closer. A single cloud had parked itself over the summit like a cap, and the mountain just stood there behind the fence line, quiet, like it had all the time in the world.

That's the thing about a moment — it doesn't ask for anything. You just have to be standing there when it shows up.
