Before the Music

A man petting a dog lying on the greenhouse floor while a woman smiles toward the camera, Mount Rainier visible through the open doors behind them

Before the music, we just sat a while. Zach on the bench with his hand on the dog’s head, Crystal in the green chair across the rainbow rug, and the greenhouse doors propped open with Mount Rainier sitting right there in the doorway like it had come to listen too.

The place was already full before a single note was played. One pup lying in the doorway, the other standing in the middle of the rug deciding where he belonged, every bench loaded with pots and the grow lights humming on along the plants.

Then out to the pasture while the sky turned. The mountain went pink, the fields went gold, and we stood at the fence line with flowers in our hair and our arms around each other, our house up on the hill coming on behind us. That is the kind of hour you don’t plan — you just get it.

The music came after this. But this is the part I keep thinking about: nowhere else to be, and the whole farm sitting quiet around us.

The greenhouse interior with two dogs on the rainbow rug, a guitar case leaning at the left, and the pasture and mountain visible through the open doors
Both pups in the greenhouse, waiting for the first note.
The back of the greenhouse with potted plants lining the benches, grow lights glowing beneath the shelves, and a small dog in a blue coat standing on the rainbow rug
Grow lights on, plants everywhere, and one pup in his coat standing in the middle of the rug.
Two women smiling at the camera in a farm pasture at sunset, a snow-capped mountain and pink clouds behind them
Out in the pasture while the sky turned.
Two women standing arm in arm in a pasture at sunset, a faint moon overhead and a house on the wooded hillside behind them
Arm in arm at the fence line, our home up on the hill behind us.
