Dog Days of Fall

These are the dog days of fall, and Bernie and Fiona are spending them in their cedar house.
The two of them have made it their headquarters — a cozy little spot to duck into when the air turns crisp and the rain comes through.
Bernie stands guard in the doorway with that big fluffy tail curled high, while Fiona peers out from behind him, taking it all in.
Whatever the weather decides to do this fall, these two are ready for it — together, in their cedar house.
Marley, meanwhile, has chosen the big blue velvet chair. Up he climbs, turns twice, and curls into the cream cushion with his plaid coat on and his eyes half shut — the warmest spot on the property, as far as he is concerned.
And then there is the waiting. Jen is out and about, and until she gives the all clear, nobody is going anywhere. So we wait together: the whole pack spread out on the camper floor, each one claiming whatever patch of room they can find.
The broom leans by the door, the bowl is out, and somebody checks the path every few minutes. Waiting is a great deal easier when you are doing it together.
Treats help the waiting along. A line of them goes down on the floor and the big one bends right over them, working her way along the tiles like it is the most important job of the day.
