Duke has been here over a month

Duke, a scruffy tan and black dog, lying in the sunlight on green grass scattered with fallen leaves, trees and hills behind him

Duke has been here over a month now, with his person Zach, and he has settled straight into our daily routine.

He's one of our elders — an old boy on three legs — and he has a way of making the day feel ordered. Morning, feed, a slow walk, a patch of sun. It's so gratifying to have him around.

His favorite job, hands down, is helping me prepare the pig feed. He's right there beside me the whole time, convinced he'll get to eat the pig feed when it's ready.

And when the chores are done he finds the sun and lies down in it. Resting in a warm patch of sun helps his stiff joints — just like me!
