Last Night in Clay

A grey clay sculpture lying on a leather surface, its forms rising and folding from a broad base up through a lifted, flowing shape with open hollows

Last night, I began a sculpture, and it just turned out beautiful.

It’s been such a powerful weekend, and I believe that what came out in the clay was a beautiful representation of it: beginning up in the spirit realm, being weighted down by the body, and then the emaciation inside — and then going back up to the spirit realm.

The clay knew where it was going. It rose and folded, lifted and opened, the way the whole journey felt. It really felt wonderful.

The clay sculpture seen from the side, resting on a worn leather portfolio, its rising forms gathered and pressed open at the middle

The underside of the clay sculpture held in one hand, a tall hollow arching up through its lifted forms
The emaciation inside.
The sculpture in motion — its folds and openings.
A closer look inside.
Going back up to the spiritual realm.
A hand holding up a squeezed piece of grey clay inside the camper, finger marks and deep crevices pressed into its surface, a leather-banded watch on the wrist
Before beginning the carving, I squeeze my hand into the clay, so my hand will fit every time I pick the piece up. This has become a signature style, marking this moment in time.
