The Hug I Need

Miss Iz's hand holding a small hand-carved clay figure, its curled form resting against her palm in the warm light of the evening studio

The last two evenings I've been carving about the death of my mother — her beauty, and the cancer spreading from her shoulder. Feeling the truth of what was hidden, feeling the love and the grief all together.

I've been working through the photos of her passing. The anniversary of my memories coming back is October 27th — nine years ago in two days.

It begins with the clay squished between my fingers and ends up being the hug I need.

She began as clay squished between my fingers.
The carved clay figure from the side, one arm wrapped around its own shoulder in the lamplight
Carving her beauty, and everything that was hidden.
The carved clay figure from behind, its form folded into itself like an embrace
Nine years on, the love and the grief arrive together.
