This evening’s sunset, a true gift of nature

Mount Rainier centered above a line of evergreens and golden autumn trees, a reddish-brown post-and-rail fence stretching across a grassy pasture in the foreground, under a wide sky of rippled salmon-pink and rose clouds

This evening’s sunset, a true gift of nature.

The whole sky turned to rippled pink and coral, wave after wave of it, and the mountain came up through the middle of it in soft alpenglow. The pastures went gold, then quiet.

The herd stood out in it. An airplane crossed the ripples. Up on the hill, a window in our own house came on as the light went.

Nothing we did made this. It was just handed to us, and we got to be standing right here for it.

Three horned cattle spread across a green pasture beside a dark open-front shed, with Mount Rainier centered behind them under a pink rippled sky and a small bright moon above the horizon
The herd, still out in the field while the light came up.
Mount Rainier in pink alpenglow low in the frame beneath a huge expanse of rippled magenta and coral cloud, with a small dark silhouette of an airplane in flight at the upper right
An airplane crossing the ripples — the sky was that clear.
Our home up on the hill — a two-story house with dark siding and solar panels nestled on a hillside of dark firs, one window glowing warm yellow, under a rosy pink sunset sky

Mount Rainier framed at the left of a wide farm panorama, long post-and-wire fence lines receding through golden pasture toward tall silhouetted evergreens on the right, under a ceiling of wave-rippled pink cloud
Fence lines running out under the whole ceiling of cloud.
